Postcards – Jay’s Solo Task

For my solo task I decided to create 6 postcards which linked to our group game project. I chose which cards to do from the “tiles” which we created, these being; city, desert, grass, mountain, snow and water.

At first I created concept art on paper to decide on how I would like to present my postcards; there were the two designs which I thought about doing although they are very similar with slight changes.

After deciding which concept art I liked the most out of the two. I then created my 6 postcards using Adobe Photoshop.

The images which I used for the environmental backgrounds on my cards were found using Google Images, I will provide links to each image I used under the images.

Research

Once I created the images I have then researched the different types of Climate Change which happen in the areas shown on the cards. After gathering these facts I then included them on the back of each card to spread awareness of what Climate Change is doing to the world or being caused by in the different environments.

City

Cities are one of the major contributors when it comes to climate change; they consume 78% of the world’s energy and produce more than 60% of the greenhouse gas emissions.
In October 2018, the World Health Organisation reported that 93% of children in the world breathe in contaminated and toxic air every single day. The organisation also estimated that in 2016, that over 600,000 children died due to suffering lower respiratory infections caused by the polluted air.

Desert

Due to the Climate Change which is happening around the world, it is effecting the deserts fresh drinking water due to the melting glaciers & snow-packs in snowy areas, because of this it is increasing evaporation and also causing dust storms to push deserts out into communities’s edges.

Due to the long-termed rise of CO2 levels in the desert when there is lack of rainfall, this could give some of the exotic plant species a boost but this means the extra plant matter would be more fuel for fires in the desert. However despite the bad effects which the CO2 levels have, it helps the desert plants saviour the water when it rains.

Forests

In the USA, forests occupy approx. 740 million acres, about 1/3 of the country’s total land area. USA’s forests provide many benefits which include; clean water, air, wildlife and climate regulation. Climate change can increase threats to forests, such as; pest outbreaks, fires and drought.

Mountain

Due to the world heating up because of Climate Change, mountain glaciers are melting at an extraordinary rate, all whilst rare plants & animals are struggling to survive up on the mountains. Apart from Climate Change effecting nature, mountain people are facing even greater hardships.

Snow

Snow fall is an important part of our planet’s climate system. Snow cover helps regulate the temperatures of the Earth’s surface, once the snow melts; the water residue then helps fill rivers & lakes in many regions of the world.
With the Climate Change which is happening it is making snowfall less likely with each passing Winter, causing shorter Winter seasons and earlier Spring melts.

Water

Water is the primary area which we will notice the effects of Climate Change in. The availability of water is becoming less predictable in many places around the world and increased incidences of flooding; which can cause destruction of water points & hygienic facilities and also causing contamination in water sources.

Final Product

These are the 6 final post cards which I have created for my solo project. The images shown was all made using Adobe Photoshop, I have created both the front of the postcard and also the back.

The City postcard
The Desert postcard
The Forest postcard
The Mountain postcard
The Snow postcard
The Water postcard
